Inside the National Society of Black Women in Medicine at Delaware State University

At Delaware State University, the National Society of Black Women in Medicine is more than an organization. It is a space where Black women in STEM can grow, connect, and finally feel seen. Our chapter was founded to support students who are pursuing careers in medicine and health care, while also creating a community where we can learn from one another, share our stories, and build confidence in the spaces we want to enter.

As a chapter, our goal is simple. We want to prepare the next generation of Black women physicians, researchers, and health leaders. We do this through hands-on professional development, mentorship, community service, and intentional wellness programming. Whether we are hosting Medicine Mondays, running our annual events, or collaborating with partners across campus, we pour into our members so they can show up as their best selves both in and outside of the classroom.

One of the things that makes NSBWM special is the culture. Our members show up for each other. We celebrate wins, study together, talk through challenges, and build friendships that extend far beyond college. DSU students always say they feel safe here. They feel motivated here. And they feel supported by women who understand their journey and want to see them succeed.

This year we are expanding our programming with more skill building workshops, more medical career exposure, and more service opportunities rooted in public health. Our chapter also hopes to collaborate with other organizations to reach students outside of our major and help more women discover their place in STEM.

NSBWM DSU is still a young chapter, but our impact is already visible. We are creating spaces where Black women can lead, take up room, and step confidently into careers they once questioned if they belonged in. We are proving that representation is powerful and that community matters.

Being part of this sisterhood has shown me that when Black women in medicine unite, learn together, and lift one another up, the world shifts. We are not just preparing for our future careers. We are building a legacy
