A Campus Conversation That Mattered
Last month, our Campus Health Intern wellness team hosted a “What Is Love?” event that turned out to be a very engaging and thought-provoking activity. The goal was to create a safe and open space for students and staff to explore the meaning of love in all its forms, self-love, friendship, and romantic relationships, while promoting emotional well-being.
The event featured two panels that brought these topics to life: one panel of professional experts and the other of Delaware State University student leaders. Our student panel shared real, relatable experiences about navigating college relationships, setting boundaries, and practicing self-respect. Their openness created a sense of connection and reminded everyone that they are not alone in their struggles or questions about love.
Our professional expert panel, including Dr. Chanda Reynolds, DSU Alumnus, and Dr. Shawneya Ellis, who offered insight on healthy communication, emotional wellness, and what love looks like in practice. They provided guidance on recognizing red flags, building supportive relationships, and caring for your mental health. Their perspectives helped bridge the gap between lived experience and professional knowledge.
One key takeaway from the panel was the importance of communicating expectations early in relationships, being honest about what you want and need sets the foundation for trust. Another valuable point was that lasting relationships grow from mutual respect and emotional safety, not just affection. Finally, both panelists emphasized that self-love isn’t selfish; it is what allows you to show up authentically and set healthy boundaries with others.
The event’s success was visible in the level of participation and enthusiasm from attendees. Everyone engaged deeply with the discussion scenarios and reflective questions we prepared. Each scenario encouraged participants to think critically about healthy relationships, communication boundaries, and respect. It was inspiring to see how open and honest people were as they shared their perspectives.
One of the highlights was seeing how the scenarios sparked meaningful conversations. Participants appreciated that the questions were realistic and relatable, allowing them to connect the topics to their own experiences. The interactive format made the event both educational and enjoyable, strengthening our theme that love starts with understanding and self-respect.
Overall, the “What Is Love?” event exceeded our expectations. It encouraged conversations that matter and reinforced the importance of emotional wellness within our community. I’m proud to have been involved in planning it and grateful for the positive feedback from those who attended. This experience reminded me that wellness programs can make a real difference when they speak to both the heart and the mind.
